A picture can say more than a thousand words – and Mamoru Oshii’s Angel’s Egg is a breathtaking proof of it. This hauntingly beautiful animated tale, told with minimal dialogue, follows the arduous journey of a Girl and a Boy. She carries with her a mysterious egg, fiercely protecting it in the belief that it will one day hatch into an angel. He, on the other hand, wishes to break it open to discover what truly lies inside. Upon its release, this post-apocalyptic allegory was a commercial failure; today, however, it is revered as a cult classic. Marking the 40th anniversary of its premiere, the film was presented in a newly remastered version at this year’s Cannes Film Festival – and now audiences at Future Gate in Prague, Brno, Šumperk, and Hradec Králové have the chance to experience its unforgettable vision on the big screen.
